Frequently Asked Questions
Why Lazarus?
Many people thought ESVA was dead...What virtualisation platforms are supported?
Today only VMware platforms are supported in production environments. Can I run ESVA on bare metal?
Not officially, although some people have sucessfully V2P'd ESVA to bare metal in the past. Check the forums, although doing so kind of misses the point of a virtual appliance and means that updates might not work properly or break your system. Can I upgrade ESVA 1.7 to 2.0?
Unfortunately not - these two versions are way too different to do that, although there is a way to migrate from 1.7 to 2.0 retaining your data. What's new in ESVA 2.0?
Everything and nothing. The user interface is pretty much the same, most of the software is the same (although latest versions). The underlying Operating System is now CentOS 5.2 (it was Fedora Core 4). Some new features have been added (SASL, TLS support) with some more on the way. The update mechanism is just that - updates are made available to upgrade to new minor releases within the 2.x family as bug fixes and new features come online.
Think of the initial 2.0 release as the base platform for lots of cool new features to come. The fully scripted build process used for 2.0 will mean that future major releases and ports to other virtualisation platforms should be greatly simplified - assuming that the CentOS base remains.
