Banner, yum bugs in 2059

Postby prisoner881 » Tue Nov 24, 2009 6:52 pm

Banner page on root console login still shows 2.0.5.8 after 2059 update.

Also, doing a "yum update" right after running esva-update causes a ton of yum failures. See below:
Code: Select all

I had the same errors. I solved it this way :

Code: Select all
yum erase perl-Test-Harness perl-Sys-Syslog perl-Test-Simple perl-bignum perl-File-Temp perl-Scalar-List-Utils perl-Math-BigRat

then update and then add again the removed packets one at a time.

They have been added by MailScanner and they seem to conflict with the repositories. With the more recent versions of MailScanner the installation does not force to install its own perl packages so there should be no further issue

Borni,

Thanks in advance!

Since implementing this I have been getting a strange error.

In the daily email with the subject line: run-parts /etc/cron.daily I get the following:
Code: Select all
/etc/cron.daily/KAM.cf.sh:

/usr/bin/run-parts: /etc/cron.daily/KAM.cf.sh: /bin/bash^M: bad interpreter: No such file or directory
/etc/cron.daily/mailwatch_maint.sh:

Any ideas what might be causing this?

seems someone has edited the script with a DOS editor ...

try

Code: Select all
dos2unix /etc/cron.daily/KAM.cf.sh

this removes the bad/DOS-type newline characters.

so these perl packages are still installed.
Try to remove them either with

Code: Select all
yum erase <package>

or
Code: Select all
rpm -e <rpm-name>

you cannot update perl unless these packages have been removed

I did the same on my esva test VM :

yum update perl

Ok. You removed packages perl-IO perl-File-Temp perl-Math-BigInt perl-Math-BigRat perl-bignum, but did not install after perl upgrade.
Is that ok?

I did as you said. But yum update still runs with errors:

yes I have two more servers running with some homebred system similar to esva and both are productive without the removed packages.

quite strange as esva-update also removes these perl packages before updating.

After perl update I ran esva-update to update from 2058 to 2059 and it is still running smoothly without errors (except expected ones due to previous perl update and removal of packages)

perl-Scalar-List-Utils
perl-Test-Harness
perl-Test-Simple
perl-Sys-Syslog

are used and installed by MailScanner as these packages are compiled during MS-installation they could conflict with the ones from the repository.
so I would suggest to remove them also, update perl and then install them via yum.

you should stop MailScanner before removing the packages.

In case there are more errors with perl packages, these packages are installed by mailscanner during install :

perl-Archive-Zip
perl-bignum
perl-Compress-Zlib
perl-Convert-BinHex
perl-Convert-TNEF
perl-DBD-SQLite
perl-DBI
perl-Digest-HMAC
perl-Digest-MD5
perl-Digest-SHA1
perl-ExtUtils-MakeMaker
perl-File-Spec
perl-Filesys-Df
perl-File-Temp
perl-Getopt-Long
perl-HTML-Parser
perl-HTML-Tagset
perl-IO
perl-IO-stringy
perl-MailTools
perl-Math-BigInt
perl-Math-BigRat
perl-MIME-Base64
perl-MIME-tools
perl-Net-CIDR
perl-Net-DNS
perl-Net-IP
perl-OLE-Storage_Lite
perl-Pod-Escapes
perl-Pod-Simple
perl-Scalar-List-Utils
perl-Storable
perl-Sys-Hostname-Long
perl-Sys-Syslog
perl-Test-Harness
perl-Test-Pod
perl-Test-Simple
perl-TimeDate
perl-Time-HiRes

ok, I had no issue during update but after reboot MailScanner failed to start missing perl-File-Temp and the correct version of perl-IO.

go to /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/ and install the missing rpms from there.

So... I removed packadges that caused errors. Then did yum update, and after that installed manually these packadges from /usr/src/redhat/RPMS/noarch/.
Now yum update wants to update that manually installed packadges... At least system is up to date. That conflicts sucks.

full ack,

I have googeled about this issue and found some interesting posts :

https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=433836 File::Temp under Fedora 8 is part of the perl base packet (seems to be the same in CentOS now) but some apps can not recognize this due to dependencies asking for that dedicated packet.

some people suggested to force installation but this can break your CentOS into pieces ..... so not the best idea
some suggested to replace mailscanner packets for Perl Modules with those from rpmforge, nice try but not all were successful

so there still seems to be an issue with CentOS ..... possibly not with fedora but it is not recommended to use fedora as a server in production environment.
With Opensuse 11.0 I also had trouble installing clamav. I will proceed investigating that stuff.

I'm getting the sense that 2059 is not production ready, then. If you can't update it because of package conflicts, it can't be deployed, period.

CentOS had the advantage of being a clone of RHEL, which means it's (theoretically) more supportable in corporate IT environments.

it is not related to 2059 but you can see the issue there. In 2058 all perl packages are excluded from update that's all.
if you exclude perl packages the issue is not visible any more. so it is then ready for production

in /etc/yum.conf you can add exclusions for yum.

in 2058 there has been a line

Code: Select all
exclude=perl*

to prevent update for all perl packages.

Sorry about the silence - I'm working on a fix that doesn't just mask the problem.
Obviously instead of blocking all perl updates which has the effect of breaking other updates, you could use yum update --nodeps which skips broken dependencies.
Fixing this issue is going to be non-trivial and will take some time...

Did you mean --skip-broken? Coz --nodeps no such option in yum...

This Perl update issue has been in ESVA for a while it seems, so I can understand why you'd say it's non-trivial.

That being said, what is the basis for the issue? Are you custom compiling something because packages aren't meeting your needs? Or is this just another wonderful example of Linux's "dependency hell"? I'm asking because I'd like to help if I can.

Ah, I didn't realize 2059 had left this out. Of course -- and as Andy points out above -- this only masks the issue instead of correcting it. Not being able to update Perl can be a showstopper if there's a Perl vulnerability in the installed packages. I haven't checked the installed versions versus the current ones to see what the changelogs show, but I'd be shocked if there aren't at least a few security bugs fixed here and there in the multitude of Perl packages present in ESVA.

I also noted the ESVA stock yum.conf excludes kernel updates. I don't think 2058 did. Can you confirm that? I know I modified my 2058 yum.conf so I don't recall what the stock settings were.

well .... if it was no showstopper in 2058 why should it be one in 2059 or vice versa?

the same issue was present in 2058 but hardly anybody knew it after it was not visible.

I really can not understand why it should now be a big issue

2058 also excluded kernel updates.

Why?

really simple. If you update the kernel you possibly lose vmware-tools (they have to be compiled with the new kernel) and so you lose network connectivity.
funny thing if your esva simply disappears during the night due to a kernel update and you only see a non functional box with no clue what has happened.

If you want a kernel update then do it manually via vmware console (so something like physical access to the server) during a planned outage window.

Most perl packages can also be updated but at the moment it means some manual work - nothing to be automated

This issue has been discussed on mailscanner mailing list and there are obviously three parties :

Party one : The no-probs-party
They do not experience any issues updating anything or are running really old verions of Linux (e.g. SuSE 9.3) and do not touch their system at all

Party two : The we-have-problems-with-perl-but-found-a-solution-party
They suggest not to install any perl packages shipped with MailScanner and instead install any package from rpmforge and only use mailscanner rpm from the MailScanner package

Party three : the developer-party
They say "other parties do what you like but party two don't blame us if something gets broken" they suggest installing MailScanner WITH the packages shipped with MailScanner (due to some are the most recent ones) or at least use fsl.com beta yum repository (ready rpms fro perl)

Form the distance neither party may be a party somebody would like to dance with. But it seems the issue is more obvious with RHEL/CentOS. You possibly can fix it by using Fedora (but have much shorter support timeframes) or some other non-RH distro - but you can run into other issues then.

So at the moment I only can see the chance to run yum with esva 2059 in some kind of "2058 mode" (i.e. excluding perl from auto update) and wait for Andy to find a solution. OR re-invent the wheel and find some other distro that seems feasible for you and install everything from scratch ....... and ask for support via numerous forums and mailing lists and have no community testing your system.

Edit: Edith found some typos

Re: Banner, yum bugs in 2059

Borni has hit the nail on the head.
The issue was present in 2058 for the same reasons that it is an issue in 2059 - broken yum dependencies. The issue isn't an ESVA problem per se, but one that is more obvious on RHEL & clones because of the number of perl modules included in the base perl package.
The reason why the kernel update is blocked on VMware based builds is exactly because of the scenario that Borni explains. This isn't the case with the Xen build because obviously the Xen PV kernel natively knows about Xen VMs and is independent of XenTools (really only a PV driver bundle and API).

Anyway - I think I've got a solution for now without any major freak-out, and will be included in the (once tested today) update 2060 which will be available for testing soon (similar process to the 2059 test version).
The 2060 update is essentially a bugfix only update and fixes two issues:
The version number in the banner (/etc/issue)
The yum update issue
There is also a fourth party for MailScanner which Borni missed - the ESVA community... There really are benefits to a standardized environment.

I'll post back here and in announcements when the test patch is ready for testing along with instructions.

OK to test 2060:
Snapshot your system
Code: Select all
touch /tmp/2060.test
esva-update

If it goes wrong,
Revert the snapshot.

Only because I didn't realize the perl* exclusion had been removed. I should have recognized it immediately because (duh) it had "perl" in the yum faults, but I just got used to 2058 updating without issues.

As for Perl and security vulnerabilities, you're right, it shouldn't be a showstopper for 2059/2060 if it wasn't for 2058. However, I was hoping for this issue to get fixed in 2059+ since I've always had a nagging feeling some Perl vuln was going to get us killed.

I've updated to 2060 and so far it looks pretty good. Nothing's blow up yet, and yum works just fine with no Perl exclusions. Banner looks good at 2.0.6.0. Thanks Andy!

Well, it might not be all fixed. Here's last night's cron email summary:

/etc/cron.daily/KAM.cf.sh:

And here's the logwatch:

The run.parts error seems to be the main fly in the ointment, but the logwatch shows some potential issues with CLAMD. Not sure what might be causing that. Any ideas?

Ran the dos2unix. I haven't had to start clamd manually. It seems to be starting OK on its own.

I haven't had the VM running overnight just yet (I'm migrating it to a new ESXi host) so I don't yet know if it's going to run OK or not.

Suggest doing this in the 2060 update?

Has anyone actually tested the 2060 update yet? Feedback?

Other than the bugs I reported above, it seems to be running stable right now. And the KAM bug seems to have been fixed by using dos2unix. I've seen nothing else glaring out at me.

Unfortunately I don't have it in production so I can't say how it may or may not hold up under production strains. I wish I had a way to direct mail to it such that I don't care what happens to said mail. If you've got any advice on how to do that, I'm all ears.

you could use a domain that is not used for mail (e.g. a company using multiple domains but only one central domain for mail) and add a line to /etc/postfix/transport to redirect mail to this domain to you.

Other idea : register a subdomain with a dynamic DNS service (e.g dyndns, selfhost ....) and point to the public IP of your test system. So one can send mail to "anyone@myfunnyideaforasubdomain.dynamic-service.ext"

If you spread this address it is only a question of time when spammers will find you ;-)

Not sure if this helps Andy but the Cron Deamon report this morning was this:

use dos2unix with the KAM script to solve this issue.
This error appears if one used a DOS-type editor to edit linux scripts as DOS/WIndows uses CR and LF for a new line and Linux/Unix only needs CR.

I just upgraded from 2058 straight to 2060 without a hitch. I'll be sure to report any issues I encounter (hopefully none).

Thanks for all the hard work and such a great system!

KAM.cf.sh script working?

Postby Hunter » Mon Jan 04, 2010 12:48 pm

I've upgraded to version 2060.
I fixed the /etc/cron.daily/KAM.cf.sh script file with dos2unix command.
After that I get no email message about the correct download each morning.
Is this normal behavior?

Example of message I had with version 2058 and lower:
Code: Select all
/etc/cron.daily/KAM.cf.sh:

No, the message is also not there. I don't know if KAM.cf.sh script has worked fine. If I run this script manually on the console as root, then I also doesn't see anything happen. It took some time to finish the execution, but further no visible response at all. Not on console, not in any email or other log files.

Indeed, I also can't see MTA statistics anymore since the upgrade to v2059. What can be the problem please?

Hunter wrote:After that I get no email message about the correct download each morning.

you can not see anything due to this lines in KAM.cf.sh :

Code: Select all
/usr/bin/wget -O KAM.cf http://www.peregrinehw.com/downloads/SpamAssassin/contrib/KAM.cf > /dev/null 2>&1

and
Code: Select all
/etc/init.d/MailScanner reload > /dev/null 2>&1

so not seeing something from the wget ist no error.
You should only see a message in case of an error

But for me it seems that this script has one tiny error at the beginning.

Although UPDATEMAXDELAY should equal 900 the old value of 600 is used. You can check this by changing the first line from
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash

to
Code: Select all
#!/bin/bash -vx

for testing.

then you can see

if [ "x$UPDATEMAXDELAY" = "x0" ]; then
:
else
logger -p mail.info -t KAM.cf.sh Delaying cron job up to $UPDATEMAXDELAY seconds
perl -e "sleep int(rand($UPDATEMAXDELAY));"
fi
+ '[' x600 = x0 ']'
+ logger -p mail.info -t KAM.cf.sh Delaying cron job up to 600 seconds
+ perl -e 'sleep int(rand(600));'

so I commented the line assigning 900 and changed the export statement to :
Code: Select all
export UPDATEMAXDELAY=900

This delay is also the explanation why it takes some time to run the script.
for me it is working

If you experience missing MTA statistics after New Years Eve it seems to be connected with logrotate.
On my system mailgraph stopped drawing the "temperature chart" after rebooting the system the first time this year.

I did a
Code: Select all
mailgraph.pl -v

and it showed me a lot of errors starting with :
WARNING: ignoring future date in syslog line:

it seemed to me that mailgraph has problems to handle logfiles spanning over more than one year.

So I did some kind of manual logrotate to keep the 2010 logentries in the actual log and remove the 2009 entries.
After that I let mailgraph "learn" the missing lines :
Code: Select all
mailgraph.pl -v -l /var/log/maillog

if mailgraph did some updating this year before failing you should see some of these :
update 1262784540:0:0:0:0:0:0 (SKIP)
update 1262784600:0:0:0:0:0:0 (SKIP)
update 1262784660:0:1:0:1:0:0
update 1262784720:0:0:0:0:0:0 (SKIP)
update 1262784780:0:0:0:1:0:0
update 1262784840:0:0:0:0:0:0 (SKIP)

This is not an issue - unless there is no other error.
After that your charts should fill the gap (depending on when the images are updated - yearly chart takes some time, daily chart is quite fast).

you also should restart mailgraph (there is no restart function in the script!)
Code: Select all
service mailgraph-init stop
service mailgraph-init start

This is not my case. With previous version 2058, it was working fine until January, 3th. On that day I upgrade it to version 2060. After that not MTA statistics are recorded. I tried your suggestions, but didn't see any output or errors.
